Where it all began

It all began 12 years ago. I married my high school sweetheart and the love of my life.  I’m not entirely sure how the conversation about adoption started.  It doesn’t really matter.  All I remember is the decision to put a little money away every month and track it on a 3×5 card.

Then life happened.

We moved three times and had two children.  But then we revisited the adoption conversation and our desire to start the process. We were kayaking on Portage Lake in Michigan and decided we were ready to move forward.  We even told some members of our extended family our decision.

Then more life happened.

I started having health issues and despite our efforts, I became pregnant with baby number three.  A surprise blessing.  The adoption conversation was put on hold.  Again.

So here we are.  We start attending a new church and the fourth visit was a sermon on adoption.  There was no mistaking God’s tug on our hearts and there were a few phrases that our pastor said that still ring in our ears today.  “If orphan care is not on your radar, then we are missing Christianity.”  “Delayed obedience is disobedience.”  We knew that as a family we were being called to love the nations through adoption.

There are many decisions to make before we can even begin the paperwork – domestic vs. international, country, agency, gender, age.  But for now, we begin praying for the child we will one day bring home to fill our table…..
